Compute Cluster Pack is a CD that contains the services, interfaces, and supporting software needed to create and configure the cluster nodes for high performance computing, as well as utilities and management infrastructure. A prepared Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 platform consists of a head node and one or more compute nodes physically connected according to a supported topology with a supported x64 edition of the Windows Server 2003 operating system installed in advance on the head node at minimum. The supported operating systems and topologies, as well as hardware and bios requirements, are specified in Appendix 2 of this Guide. A general description of Microsoft Compute Cluster Server 2003 is provided in Appendix 1.

Installing Compute Cluster Pack (cluster deployment)
Use the following steps to install Compute Cluster Pack on your prepared Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 platform:

1.

Verify the computers you intend to configure as cluster nodes meet hardware and software requirements. (See Appendix 2: Platform requirements.)

2.

Verify that you are installing the cluster on a supported network topology that meets the needs of your users and developers. (See Appendix 2: Platform requirements.)

3.

Create a cluster head node. To do this, complete the following tasks:

1.

Verify that a supported x64 edition of Windows Server 2003 has been installed on the head node. If an organization’s plans include installing the administrative and user components on a remote computer, the remote computer must have an operating system that is compatible with the Compute Cluster Pack. Head nodes may also have additional software requirements, such as Remote Installation Services (RIS) or Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Network Address Translation (NAT), depending on the networking environment in which the cluster is installed.

Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 requires the Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0, which is included on the Compute Cluster Pack CD. The Compute Cluster Administrator requires Microsoft Management Console (MMC) version 3.0.

Minimum System Requirements

CPU Requirements

64-bit architecture computer Intel Pentium, or Xeon family with Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T) processor architecture, or AMD Opteron family, AMD Athlon family, or compatible processor(s).

Minimum RAM

512 MB

Maximum RAM

32 GB

Multiprocessor Support

Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 supports up to four processors per server.

Minimum Disk Space for Setup

4 GB

Disk Volumes

For a head node, the Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 installation process requires a minimum of two volumes: one for the system partition, and one for RIS. What is Microsoft Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003?
A. Microsoft Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 is an integrated, standards-based compute clustering platform built on top of Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition.

Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 is comprised of two CDs. The first CD is Windows Server 2003 Compute Cluster Edition (CCE), and the second CD is the Microsoft Compute Cluster Pack (CCP)—a combination of interfaces, utilities, and management infrastructure that makes up Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003.

Q. What is Microsoft's vision for Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003?
A. Microsoft's goal is to empower end users by allowing them to easily harness distributed computing resources to solve complex problems. Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 is the most recent step in that effort, as Microsoft continues to focus on making distributed computing resources easier to use, more efficient to deploy, and less expensive to operate.

Q. On what platform is Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 supported?
A. Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 is based on Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 Edition and can only be installed on 64-bit hardware.

Q. What is new for SP1?
A. Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) uses Windows Server 2003 SP2 as the foundation operating system. In addition to general bug fixes, the compute node deployment wizard of Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 SP1 is based on Windows Deployment Services, which makes adding a compute node as easy as plugging it into the network and turning it on.

Q. How do I obtain Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003?
A. Purchasing information for Windows Compute Cluster Sever 2003 can be found on the How to Buy page and Pricing and Licensing page for this product.
